| Letter to the Editor: Insurance Data Not New

Re: "How would they cut insurance rates?" Saturday news story.
The "new" study cited in this article about Texas' insurance marketplace uses data from 2003. That was the year the Legislature passed insurance reforms and a year before the competitive market portion became effective. Insurance competition is taking root.
Consumers now can shop for insurance, a far cry from the availability crisis and skyrocketing rates of the recent past. It wasn't long ago that homeowners struggled to find coverage at all.
Thanks to leadership of our elected officials and a budding, competitive marketplace, Texas insurance is on the right track. Using old data and politics of the past to describe today's marketplace is a step backward for reform and a disservice to all Texans.
