Re: "Database to target uninsured drivers," Tuesday news story.
Reining in uninsured motorists would benefit drivers who obey the law and maintain auto insurance. We applaud the state for considering a broad range of options and learning from states where tracking databases proved ineffective and expensive.
Many existing uninsured tracking programs also increase costs for consumers and create cases of mistaken identity. Taking advantage of advances in technology, Texas can pioneer a tracking and enforcement program that will avoid known pitfalls.
Law-abiding Texans deserve a program that reins in uninsured drivers without the drawbacks. As with any regulation concerning insurance, we need to do this right.
