TCAIS Realtor Brochure for Consumers

You've just found the house of your dreams.
But you're worried about finding insurance. Not to worry -- Texas has dozens of insurance companies that can insure your new home. The question is: Where to start?

Now to find them...

You want to insure your new home-to-be using your current homeowners insurance company.
Credit Agencies:

Equifax
1-800-685-1111

Experian
1-888-397-3742

TransUnion
1-800-888-4213

1. Ask your current insurer if it will extend coverage to your new house.

2. Contact any of the credit agencies listed to the right to make sure your credit report is correct. The report will provide the information you need to contest errors.

3. Make sure you know what your insurance will cover and whether less expensive or more comprehensive options
are available.

You have chosen a home, but you have not chosen a homeowners
insurance provider.
To order a copy of a
home’s CLUE report for $8, the homeowner can call ChoicePoint at 1-866-527-2600. You can also visit Choice Trust for more info.

1. Check the seller’s Comprehensive Loss and Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) report, which tracks claims information over the past three years. The home might have a loss history that makes it difficult to insure.

2. Check www.HelpInsure.com to see which companies are writing new policies.

3. Look into TDI’s Market Assistance Program (MAP) at 1-888-799-6277, which helps consumers find homeowners insurance.

4. Contact insurance companies directly to discuss coverage options, or look up independent agents -- who often represent several insurers -- in your area.

Despite your best efforts, you can’t find a company to insure your new home.

1. Write down the details and call the Texas Department of Insurance at 1-800-252-3439. The more details you can provide, the more TDI can help.

2. Be sure to collect the following information before contacting TDI:

  • why the home is being denied;
  • location and condition of the home;
  • type of plumbing used in the home,
    such as copper or PVC; and
  • maintenance records from the
    current or previous homeowner.
